Three things to bring
What to Prepare
Three things, and the third one is optional.
- A MonologueOne person speaking, uninterrupted, for about a minute. Not from How To Train Your Dragon — we want to hear your child, not their impression of someone else.
- One SongFrom the show. We will post the songs, the exact sections, the sheet music and the practice tracks when the packet goes up.
- Your Own SongOptional. One verse and a chorus of anything you like. Skipping it counts against nobody.
The one that catches people out
Practice With the Accompaniment, Not the Guide Vocals
At the audition your child will be given music only — no singer to follow. If they have only practiced with the version that has someone singing on it, the audition will be the first time they hear the music on its own. That usually goes badly, and it is not their fault.
Practice with the guide vocals for a day or two to learn the tune. Then switch to the accompaniment and stay there.
Who Can Audition
Any New Prospect student in 3rd, 4th or 5th grade.
You do not need any experience. A lot of our cast every year have never performed before. You will not be asked to dance on your own, and you will not be asked to read anything you have not seen.
What to Bring
Your completed audition packet, the participation fee (payable online or by check to New Prospect Elementary PTA), and a printed photo of your child — a school picture is perfect.
Arrive five minutes early so you are ready to go at your time slot.
What Happens on the Day
You will come in at your time slot, say hello, perform your monologue, and sing. It takes a few minutes. Our Director has cast a lot of these shows and is very good with nervous children.
The Commitment
Rehearsals run from late October to the show in January. The full rehearsal calendar goes out with the packet, so you can check it against your family’s schedule before you commit. Please do check it. Dropping out in December is hard on the child and hard on the show.

Every Recruit Gets a Part
Everyone who auditions and commits to the rehearsal schedule is in the show. The script grows to fit the cast — the dragon groups take as many performers as we have.
The audition decides which part your child plays, not whether they are in it.
